Housing cheque
Former Walloon tax advantage for the mortgage on a sole own home, abolished in 2025.
Full definition
The chèque habitat was the Walloon tax advantage linked to the mortgage on a sole own home. It replaced the housing bonus for loans taken out from 1 January 2016. It was an annual tax reduction, convertible into a tax credit, that decreased as income rose: up to EUR 1,520 per year for the lowest incomes, plus EUR 125 per dependent child, for at most 20 years. The Walloon reform that took effect on 1 January 2025 abolished it for any home bought or built from 2025, in exchange for a reduced 3% registration duty rate. Households that already received it keep it for the remaining years of their loan, even if they refinance, but the duration of the advantage cannot be extended.
