Housing bonus
Historical tax benefit on mortgage repayments, abolished in all three regions.
Full definition
The housing bonus (woonbonus in Flanders) was a tax benefit allowing deduction of capital repayments, interest, and outstanding balance insurance premiums on the mortgage for one's own dwelling. Following the sixth state reform (2014), this competence was transferred to the regions. Flanders abolished the woonbonus in 2020, replacing it with reduced registration rights (from 7% to 6%, then 3%). Wallonia replaced it with the chèque habitat in 2016. Brussels abolished it in 2017 in favor of an increased abatement on registration rights. Mortgages contracted before these dates continue to benefit from the old regime until their term.
